A bird feeder is like a bird house that is placed outside but contains seeds and other food for birds. The bird feeder can come in various sizes and shapes and usually has a hatch where the food can be put into the bird feeder when it becomes low on seed. Seed types vary for which ever type of bird is being fed. Some of the common seed choices are sunflower seeds and canola seeds.

Bird feeders are a wonderful tool in outdoor landscaping as it attracts different types of birds. These birds are like moving flowers, most with different colored feathers. It can also attract song birds that sing songs that some people enjoy to sit and listen to. The bird feeders themselves can be colorful and come with other designs.

Other animals are attracted to the food inside a bird feeder. A common animal always trying to get into the food in a bird feeder is the squirrel. Some manufacturers have made different bird feeders so that if a squirrel does try to get onto the feeder it sends an electric shock to scare of the squirrel. The squirrels pose a problem because they eat the food and then take extra to hoard it near their nest, leaving none for the birds.

Bird houses are man made homes built for different types of birds. Commonly bird houses are created with wood and cardboard. Most bird houses have the same common shape, square with a hole for entry. More complex bird houses have larger designs that mimic human homes. Most bird houses are elevated on a wooden or metal rod making them more accessible to the different birds.

Other mammals and insects use bird houses to create their own habitats to live in. Some manufacturers create squirrel homes that are like bird houses because of the common habitat. Some insects like bees use the bird house to create a habitat for their colony and use the space to reproduce. A habitat for made for multiple types of animals is called a nest box, which is closely related to the bird house.

The bird house should be cleaned after a certain amount of time to clean it of any bacteria and parasites to help improved the health of its inhabitants. Cleaning should also take place after the breeding season and when there are no more young expected. After some time, a bird can be domesticated to the point where it will not breed unless there is a bird house present.
