Garden scultpures are ornaments that compliment the beautiful flowers and greenery in a garden.  They are perhaps the reminders of the Paradisiacal past of man in the Garden of Eden, The gardens of Renaissance Italy were actually outdoor "museums'.  Classical sculptures, unearthed from the ruins of Greece and Rome, were displayed in these gardens. From Italy, the trend of garden sculptures spread to France, England and other European countries. After the Restoration (1660), garden sculptures flourished remarkably in England. The New Sculpture of the late nineteenth century was concerned with the representation of ideas, and was well suited to outdoor display. Outdoors, many people currently use decorative statues as a gesture to capture a piece of history as well as a diversion to our everyday, ordinary lives.

Sculptures today are made of a variety of materials, like fiberglass and wood. Colored fiberglass tends to gradually fade by ultraviolet light. Wood is a natural material for outdoor use. It must be expected to weather and change, but this can be regarded as part of the sculpture's nature. Mild steel is prone to rust unless it is painted or galvanized. Stainless steel, if it is of the best quality, will retain its high polish indefinitely. Ceramic sculptures are extremely durable.
