The word gnome comes from the Latin word gnomus which comes from the Greek word Gnosis which means knowledge. The gnome is often depicted as a short human like figure wearing a large conical hat in plain colors. The male garden gnomes usually always has a white beard. The gnome has be introduced in a lot of different mythical settings and has been tied to the earth in its lore, which is why it is normally depicted outside in lawns.

There are many different opinions on having garden gnomes. Some think it takes away from garden design where others believe it improves the garden. The first garden gnomes were brought to the United Kingdom in 1847 from Germany. 21 different garden gnomes were brought back and to this day only one survives. This last gnome is named "Lampy" as is insured for one million pounds by the United Kingdom.
